A five strong D&D Wine team has just returned from the region of Tokaji in Hungary. Tokaji is of course renowned across the world for its sweet wines and Royal Tokaji, our hosts, is one of the top producers.
After flying in to Budapest, we headed to the town of Mád in the heart of the Tokaji wine producing region to meet István Turóczi, Royal Tokaji General Manager and Fruzsina Osváth, winemaker. We then had a packed schedule visiting the winery, the Tokaj Hill and Mézes Mály the ‘Great First Growth’ vineyard of the region.
What came across everywhere we went was the innovative spirit of the wine community in Tokaji; and learning about the natural wine movement was a real eye-opener too.
Highlights were undoubtedly the heavenly 2007 Essencia (“out of this world”) and the rare opportunity to try barrel and tank samples of wines from right across the Royal Tokaji range. Dry Furmint wines are of often overlooked but these too were excellent and popular with the team.
Look out for Royal Tokaji wines in many of our restaurants and you can buy 2008 Royal Tokaji, Blue Label, 5 Puttonyos from the D&D Wine Shop.
We would like to thank Bibendum Wine for organising and
hosting the D&D Wine trip to Royal Tokaji.
